Media summary

The Mia Moorna building provides cross-disciplinary music, media and STEM facilities that complete the College's performing arts precinct.

The design features a landscaped courtyard that is protected from the sea breeze and is north-facing to enable music performances on an open-air stage at the heart of the space.

A unique element of the project is the two large orchestral rehearsal and performance rooms, which are placed amongst established trees and take advantage of spectacular harbour and ocean views.

The orchestral rooms are designed as large shed-like volumes clad in galvanized steel reminiscent of the warehouse buildings of the port. The galvanized cladding catches the colour of the sky at sunset when music performances are often hosted.

Balconies overlooking the entry to the building and the outdoor stage encourage students to interact with the building as a set for future performances that are yet to be imagined.

The Mia Moorna building has elevated what we can offer in arts and creative industries education. Our students now learn, rehearse and create in spaces that genuinely support collaboration, exploration, and artistic practice. The building honours connection to Country while drawing inspiration from Fremantle’s maritime identity and the raw, honest materials of the port. This sense of place gives students pride and a feeling of belonging. What I value is how naturally students move between ideas, mediums, and disciplines in this environment. Mia Moorna has become a vibrant creative hub that genuinely enhances the way our college works and learns.
