Hide & Seek Apartment is a thoughtful reworking of a beachside apartment in Caloundra, designed to support long-term living while comfortably accommodating visiting family and friends. The project responds to the distinct ways the clients inhabit their home — balancing moments of retreat with opportunities to gather, share meals and enjoy time together.
A collaborative design process distilled the brief into three guiding themes: retreat, observe and share. These ideas informed the introduction of a central, operable joinery wall that gently divides private and public spaces while allowing the apartment to open up when required. More than a partition, the joinery integrates storage, a coffee station and a music station, embedding daily rituals into the architecture.
Working within the existing footprint, the project focuses on improving flow, functionality and atmosphere, creating a calm, flexible interior that supports both everyday living and social connection.
The design and final outcome met our requirements perfectly. The Architect took us through their unique process that ensured they understood what we wanted, and we understood their solution. We have a space that works for the way we live. Our public and private spaces are separate but connected through some personal things we share with family and friends, which is perfect. The fun aspect of the “Hide & Seek” concept first felt like just a saying, but it is now very real to us and those who visit. We love our privacy, and we love our new public space.
