Humble in scale but ambitious in outcome, Goldilocks Haus is a striking residential addition that demonstrates how a single, well-considered move can transform everyday family life. Designed for interior designer Hayley and her family, the project replaces a compressed dining nook with a light-filled garden room that rebalances the home’s relationship to kitchen, landscape and gathering.
Rather than building bigger, the design focuses on precision and restraint. A lofted volume draws light and air deep into the plan, while large openings dissolve the boundary between inside and out, connecting dining, garden, pool and pizza oven into one cohesive living sequence. The addition respects the original 1979 brick home, continuing its wrapping roof form and responding to its cellular planning, while a bold contemporary material expression clearly distinguishes new from old.
Deeply connected to daily rituals, the project shows how thoughtful architecture can deliver outsized impact through the smallest of interventions.
Goldilocks House is an example of how modest changes to an existing dwelling can connect an internally focused home to its garden and suburb while respecting the era of the original structure. Up until now there have been few opportunities for architects to try their hand at altering 70s and 80s building stock in our outer suburbs. A simple palette of new materials references and respects the brick and tile fabric of the existing house showing how a modest intervention and budget can make a big impact to a family home.
Our Goldilocks extension was imagined from the moment we purchased the house — it was the missing piece. We wanted a light-filled space with a gentle touch, connected to the garden and designed to be the heart of our home. Whether it’s a day of working, cooking, entertaining or simply slowing down, the space works effortlessly. The result is exactly as we envisioned: a place that brings joy and elevates our everyday living and rituals.
