Project summary

The Gippsland Performing Arts Centre is the centrepiece of the Latrobe Creative Precinct in the regional Victorian city of Traralgon.

The design of the new 750 seat Performing Arts Centre is informed by the deep, sometimes unheralded affinity for the performing arts that exist in regional Australian life. It combines a performance facility with the attributes of a Country Hall.

In recognition of the region’s history of timber manufacturing, the design uses local timber to herald a new era of mass timber construction. The foyer expresses this in a set of tree-like, mass-timber columns which support the roof.

The design also promotes wider civic regeneration by modifying parts of existing buildings to form a new public realm.

Through its unique architectural expression, the project creates a dynamic and exciting precinct, establishing Traralgon as the major cultural hub in the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland region.

The building design of Gippsland Performing Arts Centre provides a welcoming and safe community gathering space for the sharing and fostering of culture and creativity. The open plan design and largely glass structure of the venue actively seeks to break down barriers for engagement and enjoyment of the performing arts. With a shared workspace that overlooks the creative precinct we are able to connect with our colleagues, the natural landscapes of our local township and the patrons that share in the enjoyment of our creative programs.
