Located within an existing justice precinct, the new Geelong Law Courts expansion forms part of a broader public realm. Sited on a corner, the building provides a subtle urban marker while balancing the functional brief comfortably within the site constraints.
Conceptually the façade is a ‘veil’ providing filtered light, privacy, shade and curated views out to the sea and city. It folds across corners and glazing. The gentle curves and soft edges partially obscure the hard-working functional areas within the building.
The undulating perforated screen is draped over a solid masonry base. At the corner the brick is pulled up to create an opening that floods daylight and allows secure access. The red brick entry references the heritage context.
Spaces for critical functions and complex program adjacencies have been carefully stacked to support people who will visit or work in this building including staff, the public, judiciary and vulnerable families.
‘It takes immense courage to come to the Court for help. Our specialist Family Violence Courts are designed especially to help support our court users, and to make what can be a daunting process safer and more supportive.’
