In response to a context increasingly shaped by large-footprint inward-facing resorts, Further Hotel was deliberately conceived as a diffused hotel model distributed along the Pererenan’s main street. This approach invites guests to participate in the everyday life of the village to the benefit of the local community.
The architecture seeks a sense of belonging by engaging with the presence and materiality of small temples and traditional buildings. Active ground-level spaces contribute to the street, while guest accommodation above is wrapped in hand-cut brick screens that negotiate climate, light, and privacy.
Each building is conceived as a breathing structure: the brick screens and layered thresholds support a climate-responsive architecture suited to the Balinese environment. Internal planning draws from traditional Balinese houses, with rooms arranged as layered environments shaped by shade, greenery, and gradual transitions between inside and out.
The Further project nurtured collaborations with local artisans through the making of architecture.
In Bahasa Indonesia, buatan hangan means ‘hand-made’, where intended imperfection can give way to something of higher beauty. Often applied to textiles, this can also take place in architecture, with experimentation and forbearance, together with a reference to place and culture, sometimes rare in our globalised world.
In this project, buatan hangan takes place, inspirationally. In an utterly simple yet powerful way, the architects and their collaborators have designed three separate buildings linked only by design language, along a busy arterial street in Pererenan in western Bali. These make up a small ‘design’ hotel, and provide commercial spaces at the street facing ground floor, supporting the brief and the project viability.
The buildings, part of a masterplan for four separate buildings, some larger, some smaller, are each wrapped at the upper levels in a street facing brise-soleil designed intricately from Balinese handmade bricks. The language of this facade defines and unifies the separate buildings, identified by this powerful architectural statement.
The brick screens are delightfully random, and have been locally produced, with obvious passion. They protect and shelter all that happens inside the buildings, which is so appropriate in a monsoonal climate. The interior courtyards, rooms and other spaces then respond to the terracotta aesthetic of the buildings strikingly and successfully, realising a project of great simplicity and inspiration.
“Further Diffused Hotel is an innovative concept of hospitality, that sees various buildings scattered among a small community with hotel services, a communal hub for food, beverage, and connections.
Further is a collection of individuals, multiple and inclusive, seeking to embrace Bali for collective gathering and to renew the bond with local culture.”
The Further buildings are a wonderful embodiment of our ethos, values, and aspirations.
