Diamond House is a single-residence alteration and addition project located on a corner site in Malvern East. The project retains the existing Edwardian weatherboard dwelling, restoring its original character, and introduces a contemporary addition joined by a glazed link.
The triangular geometry of the site drives the form of the new addition. Located at the pointed end of the wedge, the new two-storey volume embraces the site’s angular boundaries, generating a new faceted “diamond” form. The continuous metal shingle cladding unifies walls and roof, while punched windows with deep-set aluminium reveals are strategically positioned to frame outlooks and protect the privacy of residents.
By integrating heritage restoration, a carefully resolved contemporary intervention, and sustainable design strategies, Diamond House offers a benchmark for contemporary additions in the area. The project demonstrates how modern architecture can respect historical context, optimise challenging sites, and contribute positively to both its occupants and the community.
The renovation has completely changed the way we live as a family. Our old heritage house was dark, cold with small rooms and unusable spaces. Anja and Richard at Molecule created a home that feels open, warm and practical without compromising design and detail. Every bit of space has a purpose, and our family of four can live, work and play together, or find a quiet spot when we need it. The kids have room to grow, and the whole place feels lighter and more joyful. The renovation has transformed our life and brought a real statement to the streetscape.
