Avocado House, located in the tree-lined streets of Ewingsdale, Byron Bay, is a stunning contemporary reinterpretation of mid-century architecture, thoughtfully designed for a family of five. Inspired by the property’s breathtaking westerly views and a large existing avocado tree, these elements shaped the vision and key features to be highlighted throughout the home. The exterior features natural blockwork, local Blackbutt timber, and stone, creating a warm, earthy, and grounded aesthetic. Deep verandahs and an interplay of straight and curved sturdy columns provide shade, particularly responding to the westerly oriented living spaces, where capturing the stunning views took precedence. Its sprawling U-shaped, single-story layout enhances the connection to the landscape, with every room opening directly onto garden spaces. Avocado House prioritises a sensitive integration with its surroundings, ensuring the environment is as beautiful as the home itself.
Our family loves living in Avocado House, the spaces feel warm and relaxed, but are also really practical for the chaos of family life. The layout has meant we are always connected to the outdoors as well as maintain visual connection across the property while cooking in the kitchen, relaxing in the living room or swimming in the pool. It’s made entertaining really easy too, with the outdoor area linking everything together. My son has decided to study architecture.
