2023 Smeg Tour Competition winners

2023 winners

The 2023 Smeg Tour Competition winners are:

  • SSdH for Kerr
  • Edition for Napier Street
  • JCB for Divided House
  • Studio Bright for Garden Tower House.

The winners receive return flights to Venice to attend the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale and participate in the Smeg Tour.

The jury, consisting of influential figures from the architecture and design industries, selected the four winning projects based on their innovative design, creative use of materials, and appliances.

Smeg is proud to celebrate the talented Australian designers who embody its values and design principles. The winners will attend the exclusive Vernissage opening of the Biennale and visit Smeg’s headquarters in Guastalla, known as a hub for innovation and design.

They will also have the opportunity to experience the cultural and culinary delights of the Emilia Romagna region, including world-renowned architecture and the heart of Smeg.

Livia McRobert, Head of Marketing at Smeg Australia, said that all the entries were impressive but the four winning projects perfectly embody the Smeg values and design principles. She added that Smeg is thrilled to host them on the coveted Smeg Tour and showcase the brand’s history to such respected design talent.

Enter your design project to win a trip to Venice

Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

Smeg Australia invites design professionals to participate in the 2023 Smeg Tour competition. Be recognised for outstanding kitchen design and experience northern Italy’s sumptuous architecture, history, culture, food and wine.

Open to architects and interior designers, the competition invites participants to enter a kitchen project with Smeg appliances completed between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2022.

Four (4) winners will be selected to attend the prestigious Venice Architecture Biennale 2023 and join the coveted Smeg Tour.

Beginning in May 2023 at the exclusive Vernissage opening of the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Tour then takes in the cultural and culinary delights of the Emilia Romagna region – sumptuous cuisine, technological innovation, world-renowned architecture and the headquarters of Smeg.

Who can enter

Entrants must be individuals and there can be up to two (2) individuals per project submitted.

The entry must be made by a registered architect in the State or Territory of the project, or professional with a design related degree.

Where the entrant does not own the copyright, the entry must be accompanied by a written agreement from the copyright holder stating that the work may be entered for an award.

The entrant may nominate one other person in the practice who collaborated in the design of the project, who would also be the recipient of one of the prizes.

Entrants must be over the age of 18 years old and an Australian citizen.

The project entered must be from a residential project, including single and multi residential, new build, and alterations and additions, that includes a kitchen design utilising Smeg appliances.

Project must have been completed from 1 January 2020 to date of close of competition on the 31 December 2022 and located in Australia.

What we're looking for

Judging criteria

The project must include a minimum of two (2) Smeg major appliances, such as freestanding cookers, ovens, compact
ovens, cooktops, rangehoods, fridges and dishwashers.

Primary criteria: the innovative design and creative use of materials and the appliances – reflecting the Smeg premium
positioning of ‘Technology with Style’.

Secondary criteria: spatial planning including ease of access to Smeg kitchen appliances, use of natural light and
ventilation, interaction with other spaces in the residence.

a. Entrant must be an individual not a practice. There can be up to two (2) individuals per project submitted
b. Entry must be made by a registered architect in the State or Territory of the project, or professional with a design related degree
c. Where the entrant does not own the copyright, the entry must be accompanied by a written agreement from the copyright holder stating that the work may be entered for an award
d. The entrant may nominate one other person in the practice who collaborated in the design of the project, who would also be the recipient of the prize
e. Entrants must be over the age of 18 years old and an Australian citizen

i. You agree that the Smeg may use any entry for the marketing, promotion and publication purposes
j. Smeg reserves the right to exclude from the competition any entry that does not comply with these terms and conditions
k. Architects and interior designers are eligible to enter more than once, but only one entry per project will be valid.

about the 2020 and 2021 winners

Sam McQueeney (Queensland): Originally from Tasmania, Sam has recently joined the Vokes and Peters practice in Brisbane, Queensland. The jury believes Sam will greatly benefit from taking part in the Dulux Study Tour, using the opportunity to further his passion as a leader and influencer within his new state of Queensland. 

Tahnee Sullivan (Queensland): Tahnee is a Director at Sullivan Skinner, an architecture and design practice established in November 2018. The jury commends Tahnee’s desire to learn and passion for shared knowledge and is confident the Dulux Study Tour will offer a rich and rewarding experience to help navigate her newly established architectural practice.

Ksenia Totoeva (NSW): Originally from regional NSW, Ksenia graduated from the University of Newcastle with the University Medal. The jury believes with Ksenia’s dynamism she will benefit greatly from the opportunity of the Dulux Study Tour and the lessons that this immersion in a range of practices will provide her continuing professional development and leadership potential.

Bek Verrier (Tasmania): Bek is a registered architect and project architect at Bence Mulcahy in Hobart. She graduated from the University of Tasmania and is actively involved in the Australian Institute of Architects’ Tasmania Chapter. Bek is Founding member of The Findlay Project, Tasmanian Women in Architecture group and is also heavily involved in Parlour Salon series.

Keith Westbrook (Victoria/Tasmania): Keith Westbrook is a director at Cumulus Studio where he runs the Melbourne office. His calm, considered approach to the practice of architecture and breadth of experience at an early stage of his career will benefit from exposure to, and engagement with, the practices and projects that will be visited during this year’s Dulux Study Tour.

Elizabeth Walsh (Tasmania): As an Associate and Project Architect at Cumulus Studio, Elizabeth distinguished herself with exceptional integrity and design excellence, strongly influencing the practice’s design direction while working on projects meriting National awards and international publication. 

Madeline Sewall (Victoria): Growing up in California and studying both at University of Florida and University of Melbourne, Madeline building on her community mindset with her work with Breathe Architecture in her role as Associate Head of Houses. 

Carly Martin (NSW): Carly is a Founding Director at Akimbo Architecture, a regional practice based in Albury-Wodonga. Throughout her career she has demonstrated a strong commitment to the community and is currently Co-Chair of the Border Architects’ Forum and Director of Affordable Housing at one of Victoria’s largest affordable housing providers, Beyond Housing. 

Simon Rochowski (NSW): Simon is a founding director of studioplusthree, an architecture studio based in Sydney, working across arts, cultural and architectural projects. Since its establishment in 2014, the studio has continued to explore a multi-disciplinary approach that combines quality, craft and innovation.

Nick Roberts (Victoria/Auckland): Nick Roberts is a founding director of his own fledgling practice, Roberts Gray Architects. He graduated at both Victoria University of Wellington and University of California, Berkeley, and has worked internationally including Auckland and Amsterdam (as a design leader at UNStudio).
