Traditional Land Owners: The Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation

405 Bourke Street to be embedded in the essential ideas of Melbourne: as the most liveable and workable city. Located in the heart of the central business district, fronting both Bourke Street and Little Collins Street, the project reflects the ordered structure of the Hoddle grid, energized by the diversity of the promenading wide main streets, paralleling little streets and contributing sensitively to the tightly packed hustle of the interconnected laneway networks.

The building is an exciting and essential addition to the city skyline with its striking architectural language — a contextual response to the adjacent buildings and a celebration of the concept of the city’s grid through the laminations of glass.

Client perspective:
How does the design benefit the way you live/work/play/operate/educate/other?

405 Bourke Street is a transformative project that delivers enormous benefit to a broad spectrum of users: office tenants, pedestrians, shoppers and diners. It has breathed new life into an overlooked part of the central business district while providing an address of distinction that combines wellness, productivity and leading sustainability principles into a large, modern workplace.

By utilising the airspace above an existing heritage residential building, 405 Bourke Street’s distinctive cantilever structure allows the building to sit comfortably within the existing urban context without overpowering it, while also enhancing the ground plane aesthetic.
