VALE DR LIU THAI KER FRAIA

Statement on the Passing of Dr Liu Thai Ker, FRAIA

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr Liu Thai Ker FRAIA, a remarkable architect, planner, and mentor whose influence extended well beyond national borders, on 18th January 2026, at the age of 87. Dr Liu was a visionary architect and urban planner whose work shaped Singapore’s built environment and inspired cities worldwide.

Dr Liu Thai Ker was the distinguished recipient of the William J. Mitchell International Chapter Prize in 2018, recognised for his outstanding contribution to architecture on the global stage and his lasting association with Australia as a graduate of the University of New South Wales (BArch, 1962).

Dr Liu’s career has been marked by a strong dedication to thoughtful, people-centred design and evidence-based urban planning. After studying at UNSW and Yale University and gaining formative experience with I.M. Pei in New York, he returned to Singapore to help lead the transformation of its urban landscape. Throughout his career, he oversaw the planning of many of Singapore’s new towns and played an important role in shaping the city-state’s public housing and masterplan, earning recognition as one of Asia’s most influential architects and planners.

As the International Chapter honoured in 2018, Dr Liu’s work exemplifies the significant influence architects can have in shaping society, improving liveability, and advancing architectural practice beyond national borders. His legacy continues to motivate architects in Australia and around the world.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr Liu’s family, colleagues, and the many communities around the world who benefited from his creativity, leadership, and dedication.
