Scott Balmforth is recognised for his outstanding contribution to architecture, urban design and public advocacy in Tasmania, nationally and internationally, through practice, leadership, education and service to the profession.
As founding Director of TERROIR Pty Ltd (Australia) since 1999 and TERROIR ApS (Denmark) since 2010, Scott has led a body of work of exceptional quality and influence. His practice has delivered award-winning and internationally published strategic, master planning, urban design, public, commercial, residential and interior projects, frequently achieving innovative outcomes within challenging time and budget constraints. TERROIR’s work has been featured in major international exhibitions and publications, including AV Monographs and the Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century Architecture, and represented Australia and Denmark at the Venice Biennale. The practice has received significant international recognition, including multiple International Architecture Awards and World Architecture Festival commendations.
Scott’s contribution extends well beyond practice into leadership, governance and public service. He has served the Australian Institute of Architects as a Tasmanian Chapter Councillor on two occasions, a chapter awards juror, and as co-Creative Director of the Institute’s National Conference, Parallax (2009). He was a co-winner of the 2025 National President’s Prize as part of the Government Architects Network of Australia. His standing in the profession is further demonstrated through his appointment as Chair of the Hobart City Council’s Urban Design Advisory Panel and as the inaugural Strategic Architecture and Urban Design Advisor to Infrastructure Tasmania.
A committed educator and advocate for design excellence, Scott has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tasmania since 2008 and a regular guest critic at leading Australian universities. He is an architectural and urban design co-author of three books on TERROIR and an active contributor to public discourse through lectures, panels and exhibitions. Through sustained mentorship of emerging architects and his advocacy for adaptive reuse, sustainability and visitor experience, Scott Balmforth has made a lasting and influential contribution to the profession.
Scott Balmforth is elevated to Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects in recognition of his distinguished service to architecture, his leadership in shaping the built environment, and his enduring commitment to advancing architectural practice and culture.
