Expo 2020, Dubai

A Day at the Australia Pavilion at Expo 2020, Dubai, was coordinated by the International Chapter of the Institute.

The Australian Commissioner General for Expo 2020, Justin McGowan, the Institute’s National President, Tony Giannone, and International Chapter Chair, Samantha Cotterell, welcomed an engaging array of Australian architects to speak about their work and experiences of designing key assets for Expo 2020, including Liam Proberts of bureau^proberts, Matthew Utley, principal at Grimshaw, and Richard Fenne, principal and regional executive chair of Woods Bagot.

The audience were hosted by Houssam Abiad, and were delighted with presentations from Jefa Greenaway, director of Greenaway Architects, and Tristan Wong, director of SJB, on the Australian Pavilion as part of the Venice Architecture Biennale, and Sarah Lynn Rees, of Jackson Clements Burrows Architects and co-chair of the Institutes First Nations Working Group and Advisory Panel, who spoke about Indigenous architectural awareness.

This culminated in an Austrade announcement:

Austrade will work with the Australian Institute of Architects International Chapter to promote architecture as a key export in the MEA region.

As part of this announcement, Samantha Cotterell was awarded a Gold Medal by Justin McGowan.

The event was recorded and can be watched here. For more photos from the day, see the International Chapter’s Facebook page here.
