EOI – Alternative Council Member, International Union of Architects

REPRESENTING

Richard Kirk, International Union of Architects (UIA) Region IV – Asia and Oceania (term July 2023 – July 2026).

introduction

Expressions of Interest are being sought from members who wish to represent the Australian Institute of Architects (the Institute) on the UIA Council, as an alternative council member when our current representative Richard Kirk, is unavailable to attend. The alternative council member will be on the UIA council for a three-year term, beginning 2023, until July 2026.

About the role

Richard Kirk was re-elected as a council member for Region IV at the UIA General Assembly in Copenhagen on 8 July 2023. The Institute requires an alternative council member for Richard Kirk – this is stipulated in the UIA’s articles and bylaws. This position is vital to the Council as it assures equal representation should the titular member be unavailable or indisposed.

As a ‘proxy’ to Richard Kirk, the alternative council member is required to attend online UIA meetings and liaise with Richard Kirk periodically to relate meeting actions and outcomes. The Institute cannot cover the cost of international travel and accommodation, however, there is no travel anticipated for this role.

Background

The UIA was founded on 28 June 1948 in Lausanne, Switzerland, following the merger of the Comité permanent international des Architectes and the Réunion International des Architectes.

Its headquarters is located in Paris. The organisation is recognised as the only global architecture organisation by most United Nations agencies, including UNESCO, UNCHS, ESOSOC, UNIDO, and the World Health Organization as well as the WTO.

Through its Member Sections, the UIA is represented in over 100 countries and territories, geographically grouped into five regions:

  • Region I: Western Europe
  • Region II: Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East
  • Region III: The Americas
  • Region IV: Asia and Oceania
  • Region V: Africa
