This project redefines the existing Pavilion Café as a fine dining destination. Nestled in the heart of Fitzroy Gardens in East Melbourne, this is the third iteration since turn of the century of the pavilion as a place of refreshment.
A set of key principles were created by the client and the design team at the concept stage which guided the design. These guidelines established a sense of discipline and constancy through the process. The pavilion form was to remain; each dining experience is perfect; care and craftsmanship are always on show and lastly to amplify the threshold into the restaurant.Â
The structure and roof form of the building have been retained while a new entry experience, kitchen and back of house facilities breathe life into the venue. Yiaga showcases exceptional Australian design across all disciplines while the dining area harmonises with the landscape setting.
The Wardle design for Yiaga embodies many threads of conversations, long held dreams and sheer determination. The energy bought to the project by the team was fundamental to its success, we had big ideas, tight deadlines and many moving parts to contend with. A shared desire to showcase Australian materials and makers was mutually fascinating and educational. The space is a joy to work in, for others to dine in, we're all incredibly proud of what Wardle has accomplished. It allows us to do what we need to do with ease and efficiency, it’s a beautiful space to call ours.
