Waterloo Station is part of Sydney Metro, Sydney’s new rapid-transit rail system. Its design reflects the inner-city suburb’s rich Indigenous, social and industrial history and lays the foundation for the new Waterloo Metro Quarter precinct.
Outside, the station’s scale and materials respect the suburb’s existing buildings and character. Three interior levels reflect Waterloo’s layered heritage, inspired by the phrase ‘the past is in the earth and the future is in the sky’ learnt from Indigenous advisor Yerrabingin. Design elements nod to the ancient on platform level and rise to the present at street level, unified by a palette of locally informed colours, textures and art.
Three embedded artworks by Indigenous artist Nicole Monks include the smiling image of local dancer Roscoe, towering over the concourse and signalling a bright future.
Generous proportions, natural light and clear sightlines simplify navigation and make using public transport an enjoyable and uplifting experience.
