DASH Architects was engaged by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to deliver a complex heritage project involving the relocation of a State Heritage-listed Gatehouse impacted by major road widening works. Rather than allowing the loss of this culturally significant structure, the project focused on its preservation through careful dismantling and reconstruction elsewhere on the site.
A rigorous documentation process recorded every element of the building, identifying heritage-significant fabric to inform an accurate and respectful reconstruction. The design balanced the retention of original materials with contemporary building codes, accessibility requirements, and performance standards, and incorporated a sensitively designed contemporary addition that clearly distinguishes new from old while respecting the Gatehouse’s historic character.
The completed project demonstrates DASH Architects’ expertise in heritage conservation and adaptive reuse, successfully integrating a valued piece of the state’s built heritage into a modern infrastructure context while ensuring its ongoing relevance and use.
“I am very pleased to see this project completed. The gatehouse looks better than it’s looked for a long time…” 24th of July 2024 (Susan Close)
“an interior restoration and modern extension… which has protected the Gatehouse’s historic value and ensured the building can be used well into the future.” & “serve the community for generations to come” Department for Infrastructure and Transport
