Nestled within the native forest of the Perth Hills, the Valencia Aged Care Facility is an exemplary model of residential architecture that rejects the clinical austerity of traditional institutions. Grounded in the "Shining Light" philosophy, the design prioritises the circadian health and dignity of its residents through a sophisticated use of transparency and natural illumination.
A series of sensitively scaled gabled pavilions echo the local rural vernacular and deconstruct the facility into intimate residential clusters. These spaces foster a sense of domestic safe harbour. At the heart of the project, the therapeutic Orange Grove courtyard provides a protected, productive sanctuary that connects occupants to the seasonal rhythms of the Carmel landscape. By integrating a high-performance thermal envelope with a homely interior idiom, Valencia creates a nurturing, biophilic refuge that establishes a new benchmark for sustainable aged care in Western Australia.
The design is a fundamental asset to our operational model. By replacing institutional corridors with intimate residential clusters, the architecture empowers our staff to provide more personalised, attentive care in a setting that feels like home. This layout significantly reduces resident agitation. The integration of the wellness garden provide therapeutic benefits. The abundance of filtered natural light creates a calm atmosphere that supports the mental well-being while the clear sight lines to the Orange Grove courtyard facilitate easier way finding. This project proves that high-care environments can be beautiful, optimistic spaces that celebrate the hardworking members of our society.Â
