Media summary

The Heights Technical College is one of five facilities delivered under the South Australian Government’s Technical Colleges program, providing a vocational, industry-led alternative to traditional senior secondary education.

Arranged over two storeys, the college is entered via a ramped bridge leading to a generous foyer overlooking the oval and Adelaide Hills. The placement and orientation of this space was informed through consultation with local Kaurna Narungga elder Uncle Tamaru who advised the team of the importance of the Adelaide Hills in kangaroo dreaming. Future adaptability is embedded through a flexible planning strategy, internal transparency, and workshop environments aligned with industry standards. Collaborative spaces anchor the centre of the narrow floor plates, maximising daylight, views, and connection to existing tree canopy in the learning areas. Drawing on the language of a university or professional workplaces, the architecture reinforces vocational education as a serious and legitimate pathway for South Australian students.

Baukultur’s design for The Heights Technical College has genuinely lifted the way we teach and work. The sculptural form, wrapped in a perforated screen, brings in calm, filtered light that keeps learning spaces comfortable while maintaining external connection. Inside, flexible learning areas, industry‑ready workshops, and the central circulation spine make it easy for students to move between theory and hands‑on practice. The design was thoughtfully developed through end‑user engagement and guidance from Kaurna elder Uncle Tamaru, resulting in a modern teaching environment that maintains external and cultural connection, inspires learning outcomes, supports our staff, and energises our students every day.
