Considerable international research was undertaken into the design of singular headquarters buildings. Several new headquarters buildings were visited including Camden’s Local Council headquarters in London, United Kingdom; Siemens’ headquarters in Munich, Germany; and, Microsoft’s headquarters in Kongens Lyngby, Denmark. The key design influences were determined, as follows:
provide raised floors for the distribution and future flexibility of power, data and land telephone locations;
provide ceiling voids for the provisions of air-conditioning, fire services, sprinklers and artificial lighting;
enhance the locations of inter-connecting feature staircases between floors to visually and socially ‘connect’ people / occupants;
provide informal breakout areas on each floor to encourage communication between people / occupants;
create a modern yet welcoming environment for the occupants with optimum exposure to the adjacent urban and sea views; and,
achieve the highest energy sustainability credentials possible with LEED, BEAM and WELL “green” certifications for the interiors of the building.
