Alhambra is a series of extensions and layers around the retained 2-storey building layering on the owners’ new history and providing a place to gather as a family and as a community. The elements are linked by promenade, view and water geometries.
A key planning aspect were the establishment of four gardens opening to the north. Each has separate identity and planting scheme.
The courtyards reveal themselves progressively culminating at the hidden pool and framed garden views.
The plan is revealed by promenade linked by curated views to and from the gardens, and around the intervention of a serpentine of concrete wall which is cut through existing building and extending beyond.
The gardens reinforce the views within and beyond the site.
The promenade is enhanced spatially by the location of key voids, compressive lower ceilings and expansive volumes and natural lighting and a network of tightly structured views and axes.
The design retains the bones of the original family home, layering on our new history and providing us a place to gather as family and community.
