The Prahran Arcade project in Melbourne revitalises one of the city’s most significant Victorian-era heritage buildings, bringing new life to an iconic retail landmark. Originally opened in 1890, the Arcade had been obscured and altered over decades of tenancy, with key architectural features hidden or neglected. This project restores and celebrates its original character, revealing timber ceilings, heritage shopfronts, floorboards, and the grand double-height arcade volume. Thoughtful interventions, including bespoke lighting and careful integration of services, enhance the heritage fabric while providing a contemporary, fully operational Dan Murphy’s retail tenancy.
Delivered by Nordon Jago Architects in close collaboration with Endeavour Group, Artro Management, MPA, and JHA, the project balances heritage conservation with modern functionality and sustainability. By preserving and adaptively reusing the building, it minimises environmental impact, enhances the customer experience, and contributes positively to Melbourne’s urban and cultural fabric.
The restored Prahran Arcade store allows Dan Murphy’s to reconnect with its historical roots, reinforcing its operational philosophy and brand identity. The design enhances customer experience, supports efficient retail operations, and celebrates the heritage of the building, aligning with the company’s commitment to accessibility, service, and quality. The project has been enthusiastically received by staff, customers, and the broader community, reflecting its cultural and operational impact.
