The Poppy Farm (est. 1853) development provided us with a unique opportunity to celebrate the changing patterns of rural building in country Australia. Starting as a very modest one room settler’s cottage of the 1850s, the farm grew with a more substantial stone house added in 1870, and then a larger bungalow in the 1930s.
Our aim was to separate the existing eras of buildings and add a distinctive modern rural building reflecting our era.
Our clients immediately warmed to the concept of buildings wrapping around a lawned courtyard – a format reminiscent of the cloistered courtyards of Oxford where they met. We shared the thought that the settler’s cottage was so unique it should be the focus from the entry.
The addition takes from practical rural farm buildings, clad externally with corrugated iron and stone.
