Media summary

The Picnic Island project is a profound architectural response to its remote Tasmanian ecosystem, engineered as a fully off-grid, self-sufficient retreat. Its precise form, conceived through the stepping, slicing, and dissecting of the built volume, is a direct representation of the Hazards Mountain Range dominating its southern vista. The design achieves total autonomy with a 100% rainwater harvesting system and a 54kW solar/battery array, validated by a high-performance methodology. Ecological integrity is paramount, guided by a 'tread lightly' philosophy and a rigorous Little Penguin / Shearwater Management Plan to protect seabird rookeries. Construction waste was eliminated through off-site pre-fabrication, while operational waste is managed by an on-site composting system. The project strengthens the regional economy through local collaboration and actively honours the cultural practices of the Palawa people, positioning the architecture as a catalyst for sustainable, inclusive tourism and reconciliation.

“We designed Picnic Island in harmony with the landscape, elements, and native wildlife. With buildings positioned to maximise natural light, views, and airflow, we have simultaneously reduced energy use and enhanced comfort. Flexible indoor–outdoor spaces support a private and immersive guest experience, and an in-built compact gym wall encourages a healthy lifestyle even in a remote, off-grid setting. Sustainable systems and durable materials will enable efficient year-round operations, while the simplicity of the design invites guests to slow down, reconnect, and engage deeply with nature and wellbeing.”
