Media summary

The North Wright Compact Housing precinct reimagines suburban density through community‑driven design and sustainable architecture. Twenty‑three compact courtyard homes, set within a lush landscape framework of laneway gardens and microforests, demonstrate how compact living can be generous, social and environmentally ambitious. Modernist cues inform the external architecture, with clean, durable metal cladding and recycled timber surfaces framing private courtyards and inviting light deep into each home.

Interiors continue this clarity. Raking ceilings create a bright, uplifting atmosphere, while eco carpets and Marmoleum provide healthy, low‑impact surfaces. Thoughtful planning embeds study nooks and quiet retreats without sacrificing the openness of shared living spaces. Six diverse typologies, including dual‑key dwellings, give residents flexibility to grow, adapt or live multi‑generationally.

With recycled materials, low‑carbon construction, double‑wrapped envelopes, heat‑recovery ventilation and 5 kW solar across all homes, the project showcases a compelling, community‑centred model for sustainable suburban living in the ACT.

For us, the project represents a shift towards more sustainable ‘missing middle’ housing types with a stronger connection to the country and community. The highly successful outcome has delivered 23 high-performing homes with reduced living costs and improved comfort and landscape amenity.

Trella delivered on the brief with efficient passive solar design; spacious, natural light-filled living areas; a mix of flexible floor plans for courtyard homes with ‘room to grow’ and landscaped gardens. Feedback from residents and stakeholders highlights the homes’ comfort, quality and meaningful design that connects residents through consciously designed interfaces and shared spaces with its natural surrounds.
