The New Footscray Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility that brings world-class healthcare to Melbourne’s western suburbs and the broader Victoria region. It stands as a vital community asset, embodying the spirit of the local area.
Known affectionately as “the People’s Hospital,” it was shaped by years of community advocacy and fundraising, ensuring it remains deeply connected to the people it serves. The hospital not only provides care but also fosters positive change, acting as a hub for health, education, research, and community engagement.
The campus is designed around five interconnected buildings, centred around a welcoming Village Green that invites public interaction. The interior design moves beyond traditional hospital aesthetics, integrating natural elements, warm timber finishes, and familiar materials like glazed mosaic tiles to enhance wayfinding.
Patient experience is prioritised with abundant natural light, landscape views, and soothing green spaces for relaxation, creating a calming and intuitive environment.
The design of the new Footscray Hospital directly benefits how the community in the western suburbs live, work, and receive care. The hospital’s design creates an environment that supports healing while enabling clinicians to work at their best. Clear wayfinding, access to natural light and connections to landscape reduce stress for patients and visitors, while flexible clinical spaces allow the hospital to adapt to changing models of care over time. Integrated education and research facilities support learning and innovation, ensuring the hospital not only meets today’s needs, but strengthens health outcomes for Melbourne’s west into the future.
