The New Footscray Hospital is an exemplary facility that enables the delivery of world-class healthcare for Melbourne’s west and the State of Victoria.
Affectionately called “the People’s Hospital,” it emerged from extensive community advocacy and fundraising, ensuring the hospital is deeply embedded in the needs and aspirations of its people.
Community engagement throughout the design process reinforced the idea that the New Footscray Hospital is more than just a place for healing; it is a place for living well. The layout, with five buildings surrounding a central Village Green, creates an open, welcoming civic space that connects people. This design model blurs the lines between healthcare and community wellness, offering a range of services and spaces for diverse users.
The hospital’s interior prioritises patient comfort, using natural light, landscape views, and intuitive wayfinding to reduce stress, while external green spaces provide a peaceful retreat for both patients and visitors.
The design of the new Footscray Hospital directly benefits how the community in the western suburbs live, work, and receive care. The hospital’s design creates an environment that supports healing while enabling clinicians to work at their best. Clear wayfinding, access to natural light and connections to landscape reduce stress for patients and visitors, while flexible clinical spaces allow the hospital to adapt to changing models of care over time. Integrated education and research facilities support learning and innovation, ensuring the hospital not only meets today’s needs, but strengthens health outcomes for Melbourne’s west into the future.
