The Boonwurrung (or Bunurong) People of the Kulin Nation
Victoria
The Foundation Learning Centre at Mordialloc Beach Primary School reimagines early learning through a building that is flexible, culturally grounded, and deeply connected to place. Through the sweeping archways of the brick façade, indoor learning areas connect seamlessly to outdoor play areas, allowing students to move fluidly between structured and play-based learning, supporting positive social interaction and encouraging imagination, key to early childhood development.
Balancing creativity with practicality, this new Classroom Building reflects a deep understanding of how space, light, nature, and flexibility can work together to elevate the primary school experience. It delivers a future-ready, context-sensitive, and student-centric learning environment, serving as a benchmark for thoughtful, enduring school design in Victoria.
The new design is more than an architectural upgrade; it’s a cultural shift. It changes how students and staff interact with their learning environment and with each other. The curved, organic lines and wide arches foster a sense of openness and inclusivity. Teachers report that the natural flow between indoor and outdoor areas supports co-teaching models and differentiated learning.
The building has become a talking point within the curriculum. Students explore its geometry, its environmental footprint, and its historical and cultural design references. The physical environment is not only a learning setting but also a dynamic teaching tool in itself.
