Set within the expansive Milton landscape, this house is conceived as a calm and grounded response to its powerful rural setting. Designed to embrace generous volume and transparency, the home connects its inhabitants to sweeping 360-degree views while providing protection from varied weather conditions. The new building integrates with a collection of existing outbuildings to form a sheltered compound, reminiscent of a village square, with the house anchoring the composition.
A clear plan separates living spaces to the west from sleeping and bathing areas to the east, linked by a wide gallery hall that doubles as a private exhibition space for the owner, an artist working from home. A restored outbuilding serves as a public gallery and arrival space. Recycled timber, reclaimed railway sleepers and locally sourced stone reinforce the project’s sustainable ethos, while a strong concrete plinth and structural columns anchor the house confidently within its vast landscape.
Our home is practical simplicity internally and delightful externally. Locals have commented on how well it compliments the existing old farm buildings.
Floor plan is instinctive to navigate. We ‘drive’ the house by opening and closing windows and louvres according to the prevailing breeze.
We love the illusion of space created by high ceilings, highlight windows show off the corrugated iron verandah ceiling, local reused timber in windows and so many other details.
Andrew and Ollie are both proud of the complex work they achieved to recreate Reg’s vision, we all feel privileged to be living here in such comfort.
