Media summary

Tucked into the bushland edge of Northcote, Merri Creek House respects its past and reframes it for the future. Originally designed in 1990 by Goad Fink and later extended by Fink & McMahon, this new chapter seeks to build on the craftsmanship, love and care already poured into it over its lifetime.

Blurring the boundary between past and present, a series of humble additions sit seamlessly within the existing building fabric, as if they had always been part of the picture. The thermal envelope was improved, interior spaces were rationalised and priority was given to displaying an evolving art collection. Vibrant pops of colour and hardwood timber linings are coloured in throughout, giving new life to the existing stencil without extending it.

Merri Creek House is a sympathetic renovation of a much-loved family home and a love letter to modernist design, craft and its past life.
