Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation
Victoria
Melbourne Place aims to contribute to the wider city by being polite and well-mannered but also having a personality, introducing a familiar friend to Melburnians, recognisable, even memorable. The building is tactile and materially civic in quality and scale. It considers shelter, incorporation of planted habitats and the unique and exciting nature of laneways, the sense of discovery and city-ness of them. Melbourne Place has a porous and welcoming ground plane incorporating a series of high-quality and distinct edges. There is an active corner of balconies on the north-east, operable shutters to every guest room animating the façade and revealing the presence of people, a function-room balcony in the tree canopy and a roof top restaurant with two massive oculi which gaze out to the north – a visible, friendly presence in the city which looks back upon it.
