The Matraville Youth and Cultural Hall is a multi-functional community space supporting activities like yoga, indoor sports, and parties. Designed for an 80+ year lifespan and benchmark sustainability, the building connects to its site and community. Positioned on a corner site beside a grassy reserve, new pathways link the two sites together. Judicious planning preserves 15 of the 17 native trees on site and the fauna they support.
Humble materials in Zincalume cladding, painted brick, and Australian timbers are celebrated. Exposed timber beams, columns and connections reveal the logic of the structure. Simple techniques of orientation, stack ventilation, shading and insulation allow the building to be passively cooled and naturally lit. Operable wall panels and ceiling fans cool the building in summer. In winter, underfloor hydronic heating warms the building gently.
The new community hall will serve Matraville’s cultural life well, for current and future generations.
Randwick City Council is proud of the new hall, and the facility has been very well-received by the community.
The building design and materiality suit its residential context. The preservation of significant trees on site and the erosion of its street boundaries invite the community into its perimeter. Its emphasis on sustainability is in line with RCC’s city objectives.
It has become one of our most popular, robust and versatile spaces for hire.
