SHAC relished the opportunity to provide the ‘keystone’ building on the Catholic Diocese of Maitland Newcastle’s, Chisholm site, with the design of the chapel – Mary Mother of Hope Oratory.
A sacred geometrical circle symbolises cosmic order, divine perfection, and a connection to nature. The form creates a communal, inclusive worship experience, fostering solidarity and a sense of equality whilst offering repose and equitable sanctum.
Architecture and materiality define the Oratory as uniquely separate from the schools either side, yet speaks of warmth, welcome, and unity. Rammed-earth as a monolithic textural and organic mass material connecting visitors to place, people and peace.
The structure is nestled between two modern schools. It seeks to juxtapose the traditions of flexible agile educational architecture with a slower softer and time-honored system of building. A chance for students and staff to stop, reflect and consider the importance of materials, context, time and patina.
I highly commend SHAC Architects for their exceptional design of the Mary Mother of Hope Oratory at Chisholm. The circular design of the Oratory provides a thoughtful environment for fostering a sense of calm, spiritual focus, and personal relationship with God, which encourages faith, hope, and virtuous spiritual growth in its users, particularly students, by offering a dedicated space for reflection and prayer. SHAC have been excellent in creating a unique space for our community.
