Media summary

Maribyrnong Civic Precinct and Community Hub Redevelopment is a transformative initiative breathing new life into the heart of the community. It delivers a long-term, sustainable solution with far-reaching aspirations for the future of Council and the community. It celebrates and connects the heritage of Footscray Town Hall, with new community spaces, agile workspaces and a new community park.

A primary design driver was the return of public life to the Town Hall building and restoring connection between the community and the civic centre of this municipality.

A new 6-star designed Green Star building provides a central location for Council staff who were previously spread across three separate buildings while the Town Hall is liberated from its civic administrative function and returned to the people for use as community meeting spaces.

The project demonstrates how sensitive, healthy building and precinct renewal can be a catalyst for a more sustainable way forward.

With the Town Hall being closed to the public for many years our focus was on restoring it, improving access and reopening it for meetings, events and community activities; while ensuring it could continue to function alongside a modern civic workplace. The new civic building provides the contemporary, flexible spaces Council needs to operate effectively, allowing the Town Hall to be freed from administrative use and valued for its civic and cultural role. Together, the old and the new work as one place — respecting the Town Hall’s history while supporting the needs of our community today.
