The new amenities block at the Manning Regional Art Gallery is a modest project with an oversized presence. Modest in budget and scale, it transforms an overlooked corner into a purposeful public space, delivering essential facilities while enriching the Gallery’s architectural and cultural identity.
Conceived as both utility and artwork, the block is a brick ‘sculpture’ set within the gardens. Its form reinterprets the heritage detailing of the surrounding buildings – arches inverted, corbels stretched, chimneys distorted – creating a playful rhythm that is both familiar and surprising. Locally sourced bricks from Taree’s Lincoln Brickworks, crafted by local trades, embed the project in community and celebrate local craft.
The building serves inside and out: high-quality facilities, plus seating, gardens, and a wash station for art classes. It demonstrates how small works can be generous, expressive, and connected. More than a facility, it is civic architecture that elevates the everyday and celebrates Taree.
We are delighted with what this little project has achieved. More than a toilet block, it is an engaging and curious presence within our gallery—much like a work of art. Built from locally crafted materials by the very hands you’ll see at an opening night, it has inspired a deep sense of pride in our community. This thoughtful addition leaves a lasting mark on the Gallery, our town, and all who use it daily. Heartfelt thanks to the architects, builders, gallery staff, and our funders: NSW Government, MidCoast Council, and Friends of the Gallery.
