Located in the coastal village of Hundested, Denmark, the residence is a CO2-positive residence that demonstrates how new architecture can tread lightly on old ground. Replacing a dilapidated cottage, the design innovates by reusing the existing brick basement walls as foundations, eliminating the need for new concrete footings and significantly reducing construction waste and embodied carbon.
The new form is a contemporary timber-clad gable that sits over this historic footprint. Constructed rapidly from Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) to accommodate clients living on-site, the home features an inverted floor plan to capture harbour views over the ridge. Dormer windows and a rooftop terrace expand the upper-level living spaces, while a light-filled stairwell connects to the private quarters below. Internally, the exposed lime-washed timber creates a warm, vapour-permeable environment, prioritising material health and honest expression.
