House of Shadows is a home which distills an intimate human connection to site and its passing paths of sun, moon and shadow.
Arriving slowly through the entry garden, the architecture begins to reveal itself. As you approach the front door, Its openings draw you through the living room apertures, over the blossoming Grevilla‘s and to the Tasman Ocean beyond .
Designed as a beach escape for the many or just one, the building focuses
on a centralised hearth, welcoming on arrival and separating the dining wing
from the living. The washing and bathing zones are a celebrated ritual, with intimate
exposure to the intense and often wild oceanscape.
This softness, combined with the deliberate tapering of the sharp external form calm the architecture in its context and allow for humble patterns of life to both prevail and
unfold in the rich and simple elegance that is House of shadows .
This house is shelter, inspiration, and invitation for connection. We find ourselves drawn to different spaces throughout the day, as the thoughtful design and placement of the house on its site calls for iterative discovery. We are learning new and old ways of being, working, living and playing – in tracking the light, a breeze or the change of seasons. This phoenix, from its ashes, has captured both magic and pragmatism, from its conception to living in and with it, and in the elements it is becoming a part of. It is giving us joy and a deep sense of belonging.
