Media summary

House in a Hollow is a project that has injected a heart into a freestanding house in the inner west. The house sits on a platform set into a cliff face 3 or 4 metres above the street, and the rear entry to the site sits further up the cliff.

The project reimagines the “sitting area” for the house which sits in a hollow halfway up between the upper and lower streets. The existing plan was quite dysfunctional, and although this is a relatively simple idea, in execution it has completely transformed the house. It is heartening to see than an addition of 43 m2 can have such a dramatic effect on the liveability of a house. The height of the room also has a soaring effect on the senses, making you feel connected to the sky and trees, but also safe and protected.

“We love our house!”
