Home Calling is a residential addition for a family that yearned to return to Melbourne after spending many years living abroad.
From the heritage protected streetscape, the two-level addition defers to the Federation frontage. Finely detailed steel awnings and feathered shutters offer a sense of lightness and fine grain resolution to the intervention beyond. From a rear street, the massing is less apologetic – the addition confidently contributes to the urban context as a composition of bagged brick and timber shutters.Â
On a terraced ground floor, internal spaces have been conceived as series of interplaying architectural elements, arranged to imbue occupation with sensory delight. Concrete steps are grafted into the kitchen, while a ceiling peels downward to receive a skylight, creating a naturally lit threshold to the original hallway. An upper-level retreat with a focus on framed views fosters a sense of belonging and connection to place.Â
