Media summary

The Harpers Field Sports & Community Redevelopment has transformed a former sports precinct into a vibrant community hub. The dual cricket and football Sports Club features a 300-square-metre function space with a commercial kitchen and bar, grandstand seating, inclusive changerooms, gym and meeting rooms. The adaptable Community Building offers a versatile breakout space with a kitchen, dividable main function area, a maker space, meeting rooms, a catering kitchen and a Changing Places facility. At the heart of the development lies a public plaza, seamlessly integrating landscaping, play elements, market space and public art. Designed in collaboration with stakeholders, the project prioritises inclusivity, connectivity and community engagement, creating dynamic facilities that welcome all demographics and cater to diverse activities. This redevelopment not only supports established sports clubs but activates the site for broader community use, fostering social cohesion and enhancing public amenity.

Council sought an integrated community and sporting facility with a plaza connecting the uses, on a site with historic fill, steep topography, significant trees, and an existing clubroom required during construction. Studio Nine Architects demonstrated their understanding of our brief throughout the life of the project, taking us through the concept phase, extensive stakeholder workshops during design development, and full engagement throughout construction. They were always responsive to stakeholder feedback and strived to deliver the best possible outcome for council, on budget. The final development exceeds council’s expectations.
