Media summary

Conceived as a marquee civic project for the City of Charles Sturt, the Grange Recreation Reserve facility demonstrates the role of the contemporary sporting pavilion as an inclusive and community-focused destination. Developed through a highly collaborative process between SMFA, Council and key user groups, the project responds to diverse operational needs while prioritising inclusivity, accessibility and long-term adaptability.

The multi-use architectural facility supports a wide range of users, with unisex changerooms promoting female participation and inclusive sport, dedicated SAASL offices establishing a regional hub, and a first-floor function space and commercial kitchen enabling community events and revenue generation. Robust coastal materials, curved brickwork and landscape integration respond to the site’s marine environment, while high-performance, all-electric systems and low-carbon materials underpin a strong sustainability outcome.

Positioned for accessibility, views and long-term adaptability, Grange Recreation Reserve sets a new benchmark for community-focused recreational infrastructure.

The Grange Recreation Reserve building presents as an addition to the reserve, reinforcing its role as a focal point for community. The facility was designed with significant input from end users, ensuring the layout, amenities and functionality respond to the needs of club members, volunteers, and patrons. By replacing ageing infrastructure with contemporary, fit for purpose facilities, the project positions the clubs to better support current members while appealing to prospective participants. The inclusion of a dedicated function area, commercial grade kitchen space and improved bar and dining amenities provides the clubs with the capability to diversify their revenue streams.
