GMHBA Stadium at Kardinia Park’s Stage 5 redevelopment (Joel Selwood Stand) has brought increased capacity and improved visitor experience, allowing the stadium to attract a greater number of home and away AFL and AFLW games and finals for the Geelong Cats, and in turn providing significant economic and social benefits to the community and wider Geelong region. Together with this, new cricket facilities located within and outside the stadium, provide a platform to strengthen the performance and depth of talent for the Geelong Cricket Club (a stadium tenant), the local Geelong & Barwon Region area and for the State.
The Stage 5 redevelopment connects the venue with Kardinia Precinct year-round, enhancing its link to the city and rail through the new North Entry Plaza. This plaza is the front ‘face’ of the precinct, welcoming fans of AFL, cricket, soccer, rugby or music artists alike.
The Stadium has created a new ‘front door’ to the Stadium adjacent to one of Geelong’s busiest thoroughfares in Moorabool Street as well as those arriving from the nearby South Geelong Station. The ‘Djilang Plaza’ has become not only an important entry and activation space on event days, but just as important is its role as a new public open space with various offerings. The Barwon Region Cricket Centre and Geelong Sports Museum have active frontages to the Plaza, and since opening, public access facilities such as the basketball and outdoor table tennis table attract daily usage from residents.
