Media summary

Set within bushland on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, the Galuwa Recreation Centre is designed to feel as though it belongs to the landscape. The building settles gently into its site, becoming a sensory backdrop that allows light, shadow, scents and sounds from the surrounding bushland to permeate throughout.

Permeability is central, with views in every direction – to nature and between spaces. Functions overlap and interweave as you move through the building, subtly bringing together different sports, programs and community groups. The building is planned around an internal promenade that functions as circulation and allows all spaces to be fully cross ventilated.

Despite its scale, the architecture is defined by lightness. Sweeping, sail-like roofs appear to hover above the landscape, giving the precinct an openness and ease that reflects its role as an inclusive place for movement, gathering and community life.

Delivered for Lane Cove community, Galuwa Recreation Centre by AJC Architects is a civic asset that strengthens how residents live, learn, work and play. Council is proud to deliver this inclusive facility supporting sporting clubs, schools and community groups, fostering participation, wellbeing and social connection. Thoughtfully integrated within one of Lane Cove’s natural urban bushland settings, the Centre incorporates sustainable technologies including solar power, rainwater harvesting and natural ventilation, reducing operational impacts while enhancing comfort. Flexible multi-use courts and community spaces enable year-round activation, positioning Galuwa as a resilient, future-focused hub, reflecting Council’s commitment to healthy, connected and sustainable communities.
