Fort House is devised as a series of carefully coordinated plug-on sensory extensions in order for the a 120-year-old terrace’s long-concealed sense of place to re-emerge. The additions are contemporary yet balance the differing complex arrangements to both street addresses. The rhythm of the surrounding context is continued with the predominant tin roof extension. The complex roof forms mimicking the varied, multiple and wonderful earlier Newcastle East archetypal lightweight tin add-ons to existing dwellings in the neighbourhood – The roof folds; splays and opens to reveal its context, capture sun and views.
Although our old terrace had many secrets and surprises within it, which made the project incredibly stressful at times and really tested us, it is also one of the more creative and inspirational things we have ever been through. The spaces are fun and varied and provides our family area to connect and retreat at different times and seasons! We love that everywhere is design and that each are a representation of who we are.
