Media summary

A modest house sitting comfortably on a hill in the Southern Highlands. Built economically for a couple seeking a home of quality and character. The house is sited to work with the land’s natural contours, minimizing earthworks and bedding into its setting. Designed in section to permit the owners to face south towards a view, with the sun on their back. The design prioritizes solar access, cross-ventilation, and energy efficiency, with solar panels, rainwater tanks, double glazing, and passive heating. The home’s three bedrooms, study, and two bathrooms are arranged around a central living space, with careful attention to privacy and views. To keep costs down, much of the work was DIY, including painting and excavation. The project reflects a collaborative effort, with the clients, engineer, and builder all playing key roles. Exeter House stands as a testament to achieving more with less while staying true to sustainable principles.
