Media summary

As Melbourne considers the future of its housing estates, Elizabeth Street Richmond points towards possibility: 144 homes that strengthen community and demonstrate what social housing can achieve.

Four buildings in pinwheel formation create intimate neighbourhoods, each with distinct character. Heights cascade from four to eight storeys, welcoming sunlight while weaving into Richmond’s urban fabric. Open staircases between buildings become social hearts – places for connection, outlook and spontaneous encounter.

Generous landscaping and pedestrian connections dissolve traditional estate boundaries, knitting the development into North Richmond’s life. Active retail and community spaces enliven streets, parks and laneways, creating vitality for all.

Solar-responsive design gives 95% of homes dual frontages and cross-ventilation. Strong environmental performance – 5-star Green Star, average 7-star NatHERS – ensures comfortable, affordable living while contributing to climate goals.

Universal design and shared spaces recognise housing as more than shelter: these are neighbourhoods where all Victorians can build flourishing, dignified lives.

Elizabeth Street, North Richmond provides 144 new social housing apartments giving more Victorians access to modern, energy efficient and comfortable new homes. The homes are easier for renters to cool in summer and warm in winter and are designed to meet disability and accessibility needs. The design response was informed through extensive community consultation and has provided new shared spaces including a children’s playground, BBQ and seating area and improved green spaces for the community to gather and new pathways and better connections to the surrounding neighbourhood.
