Gadigal People
NSW
Designed in the late Sydney School style, exhibiting Béton Brut and Nuts and Berries styles, the original building is characterised through the use of rustic materials, raw in-situ concrete, clinker bricks and raked roof lines.
Cracknell and Lonergan Architects worked with the original language of the building, conserving and adaptively reusing the majority of existing building fabric and structure. New additions are clearly discerned through materiality and form – bold blocks contrast with the rich original exterior materials.
New works recognise the constraints of the dense urban environment while meeting the clients desire to improve the liveability of their family home while maintaining and enhancing access to views.
Internally, the building maintains its original rhythms, ascending and descending. Moments of original detail have been retained while new materials are drawn from a restrained pallete of honest materials.
The house, fabricated in concrete and brick, was built in the 70’s, and has intimate water views from virtually all living areas – bedrooms, decks as well as a cinema/study.
The renovation has built on an already well-designed house, increasing water views with the construction of new decks, as well as extending those that already existed, covering them with blinds, roofs and heating to make them usable in wet weather/cold weather.
Orientation of the master bedroom, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe has significantly increased comfort and amenity, with privacy central to the creation of these new areas, aided by appropriate screening.
