Established in 1864, Carlton Football Club are one of the most successful teams in the AFL having won 16 Premierships in their 159-year history. A new Elite Training Facilities and Administration Building was designed to meet the current demands of the Club for both the men’s, women’s and the state league teams.
The design concept was to represent Carlton’s identity through their dark navy-blue colour and feature their branding elements into the exterior architecture and interior design and reflect the old brick terraces of the surrounding streets, creating a greater sense of a ‘home ground’ for the fans.
The resulting design brought together both football and administration departments to provide a shared learning environment which strengthened the Club’s stance on equality between the men’s and women’s programs, providing equal amenity to each and improving the link between the administration staff and football departments.
“We set out to establish IKON Park as a state-of-the-art, fully-integrated facility, the first of its kind in Australia, and thanks to Populous, that has certainly been achieved.
The venue now leads the way in High Performance and Administration Facilities within the AFL, with Populous instrumental in helping build upon and develop the objectives the Club sought to deliver.
The challenges faced with site constraints were overcome, in large part due to Populous’ global experience. This experience was also invaluable during the early design phases when showcasing emerging trends and how the Club might benefit from adopting some of these.”
