The Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre aims to build strong community collaboration and deliver significant, measurable social and health benefits for the local community.
The Centre has been recognised for its “world-leading” sustainable design by the Green Building Council of Australia with a 6-Star Green Star Design and rating – the first indoor aquatic centre in Australia to achieve this rating, with an As Built v1.2 certification expected in March.
The building form responds to the site and its wider environs to evoke the forms, textures and colours inspired by the natural environment. The iconic and strong form of Brimbank’s Organ Pipes rock formation, with its vertical ribs and undulating top edge and pooling water below, provided inspiration for the external cladding articulation and building ridge line floating above the glazed base. Views out were carefully framed and shaded to maximise external aspects or create privacy where desired.
BAWC has been a roaring success since opening. This is a place where the community can exercise and have fun while accessing health and wellbeing services. The aim was to build strong community collaboration using Collective Impact principles – different groups working towards the one goal for lasting change. The design has been sensitive to this through its open forecourt and single main entry welcoming all into an inviting Community Hub. Attention to detail, acoustics and the material palette has encouraged community to access the range of services, ensuring the centre delivers significant, social and health benefits for Brimbank.
