Blak Cede Gunyah is a welcoming Aboriginal women-led café and cultural space bringing people together through native foods, community, and care for Country. Thoughtfully designed with salvaged materials, bushfire-charred timbers, kangaroo leather, and woven pendants, the café honours cultural stories and traditions. Fire, as a symbol of renewal and connection, is expressed throughout, creating a warm and grounded atmosphere. Despite a small footprint, clever spatial planning and flexible furnishings support comfort, function, and flow. The café’s connection to a community garden strengthens its ties to place and sustainability. Inside, it offers a quiet, intimate space for Elders, families, and small gatherings, while the outdoor area fosters lively street engagement. Blak Cede Gunyah reflects a design process led by listening to culture, community, and land. It offers a gentle yet powerful example of how Aboriginal-led spaces can nurture belonging, celebrate identity, and create lasting impact through cultural integrity and thoughtful design.
